Informed in an information society

Are we being informed when being bombarded with information?

Mark Bauerlein would think so. He believes that the Internet and television do not help in acquiring knowledge, but do the exact opposite and creates a "nation of know-nothings who don't read, follow politics, or vote-and who can't compete internationally.". Bauer argues that although all Gage opportunities to gain knowledge have been provided with technology, but instead of taking advantage young Americans are more interested in teen images, songs, gossip and games.

Linda Jackson believes the opposite that all the new technology not only helps, but influences academic performance for the better. After 16 months of research and testing Linda came to the result that after one years with of home internet access GPA's went up in all test subjects.

I believe that Internet and television have the potential to really help teach and acquire knowledge, but it also provides an incredible distraction to your responsibilities. I would be interested in a survey that showed how many high school and college do their work on the computer while still having social media websites open, music playing or tv in the background. People have to be able to take advantage of the advantages we have in our modern world of information.

Medical Marijuana City Ban

In this article in the Daily Journal, Redwood City has a moratorium, or suspension of activity, on the medical marijuana dispensary.  Redwood City wants to regulate and monitor the amount of facilities that can be opened up.  Because of the conflicts with State and Federal policies making regulations is challenging.  Principle Planner Blake Lyon believes that there would be "adverse consequences" and "an irreversible incompatibility of land uses and impacts on residence and businesses" if Redwood City lets the facilities operate with review and oversight.

I believe that this is a waste of time and money in Redwood City. Marijuana is a substance that is legally prescribed to patients who need it.  Marijuana is constantly surrounded by people trying to get rid of it.  The fact of the matter is that is has been around for over 3,000 years and until recently it was used worldwide recreationally, religiously, agriculturally.  People's infatuation with the problems marijuana causes is concerning when it is proven that alcohol is a substance that does far more damage to your body than marijuana.  Redwood City should be focusing on the regulation and monitoring of alcohol consumption rather than one MEDICAL marijuana dispensary.
